Hi, I’m Fip.
I make whimsical ceramics from a studio in Barcelona.
I grew up in the UK with parents who loved hiking, which gave me a sense of feeling at home outdoors that has never left me. I find a lot of inspiration in nature, but the most magical places are the forests.
Beyond the shapes and patterns we find there, I am inspired by the feeling of being surrounded by life. The joy we feel when we connect with things that grow, and with the real, solid earth we live on, is something I seek in my connection with clay and the pieces I make.
I take a holistic approach to my pottery practice, using wheel, handbuilding, sculpture and mould techniques to make my pieces. Each technique feeds and supports the others. Just like in the life of a forest, everything is connected.
The forest is full of stories.
I love spending time in other worlds. Whether it’s a book, a game, or a D&D session, I love the sense of discovery in taking a different point of view.
A forest is a rich canvas on which to draw an imaginary world. There are stories and treasures in every nook and cranny - a sense that the more you look, the more there is to see.
I first started making these creatures to entertain myself, and I found I couldn’t stop. As their stories develop, the creatures and their world evolve and grow bigger.
No idea arrives in your mind fully formed, and while I’m working on this project I feel like I’m on a journey of discovery. There’s an excitement in that feeling of curiosity that I want to bring into my work.
Simply put, it’s fun. I want my pieces to transmit that simple happiness, too.
